RSS The Value of Teamwork

Several years ago, I read a book entitled Wisdom of Wolves, Leadership Lessons from Nature by Twyman Towery. It was a easy read, and focused primarily on the type of teamwork required to build happy and healthy organizations.

In the book, there are several pertinent quotes regarding teamwork; here are my three favorites:

  1. A company is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm. – Morris Weeks
  2. No member of a crew is praised for the rugged individuality of his/her rowing. – Ralph Waldo Emerson
  3. There is no limit to what you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit. – Anonymous

I believe these apply to anyone who is a member of a team – be it a family, community or company. Consider for a moment what would happen to your family if each member were to relate to each other as equals, with a shared level of trust and investment to the health of the family dynamic.

Similarly, at work, how might your organization be transformed if leaders expected their team members to think and conduct themselves as if they were the business owner, and vice versa?  This thought experiment might translate into a healthier bottom line, increased employee satisfaction, or improved retention percentages.

The largest companies today did not achieve their success by simply having a great idea and opening their doors. No, they are successful because they attracted the right talent and blended their teams together into a high functioning organization.

I enjoy reflecting upon such questions because it pushes me to consider new possibilities. If you think about it, challenging the status quo can lead to innovative, new business practices. This innovation can lead to personal and professional growth. And, this individual growth has the potential to result in greater productivity and organizational success for everyone.

Simply put, good teamwork requires mutual trust and respect, mutual accountability and unselfish intentions and behaviors.

    Hi Mitch,

It is tough to choose just one quote, but I would say my ‘go-to quote’ is:
We must become the change we wish to see in the world. – Mahatma Gandhi

    Another great post,
